Winter is coming is your home drafty?

Almost time for are furnaces to work all day and through the nights. Your home is warm in some rooms and cold in others. You wonder if there is something you can do about it? I'll tell you there is and not only that I'll tell you it'll save you from wearing wool socks in the winter and that sweater when its drafty inside. The more time you spend on this short list the more you can enjoy bombing around your house in shorts and a t-shirt without getting the chills. Keep reading to see are short list of 5 easy DIY tasks.


1. Furnace cleaning

Before the cold season it is always ideal to clean your furnace. Cleaning your furnace is to oiling a well tuned engine. Furnaces don't run as efficient if they are dirty or restricted. Furnace might be on but reduced heating. Cleaning your furnace also helps upkeep as you don't want your furnace breaking down when you need it the most. A furnace tech will make sure its running smoothly.


2.Furnace vents

Furnace vent wide open or closed restrict air flow or improve airflow. Easy task to open up the cold spaces vents and closing or restricting vents in warmer rooms to even out the heat distribution. It might take some time to find the right adjustment but that's what the dial is for on the heat registers, there not just for looks. Tip; If the vent won't stay were you left the shutters then use a piece of scotch tape to hold the dial in place.


3.Weather stripping

Before the cold season and every 6 months you should be checking your weather stripping. Weather stripping is the seal around the windows and door. If they have a tear or looking weathered then its time to replace them. Slow drafts or air leaks will make any area or room chilly. All weather stripping comes in different sizes so make sure its snug and not tight or long enough to cover the entire opening. If your unsure don't be scare to call a profession to assess your home.


4.Window curtains

Window curtains don't just keep the light out and peeping neighbors watch your T.V while your relaxing. Window curtains also keep the cold out and the warmth within. It's best to have the curtains run to the floor and not short. Close the curtains when its getting cold to trap the heat within the living space and open the curtains when the sun is shining to let the sun rays heat your home.


5.Attic insulation

Attic insulation is very important. After 5-7 years of install the attic insulation will settle out. Meaning your insulation isn't as fluffy as it once was after install. In cold regions you want a even coat of insulation between 20 - 24 inches. insufficient insulation will cause a lot more problems then trying to keep your home warm in winter or cool in summer.
